Sophia's Story

Sophia's Story Graphic

Sophia*, age five, lives with her grandparents and is transitioning to her aunt and uncle's home due to the grandparent's age and health. She was removed from her mother nearly two years ago due to her drug and alcohol challenges. She was quiet and hesitant when she joined our program. She spent quite a bit of time observing before engaging in activities. She shyly watched some of the other children and was encouraged by staff to join the activities. Well-trained, caring, consistent staff can significantly impact strengthening the social/emotional resiliency of a young child.

Within a few weeks, Sophia was making new friends and eagerly anticipating new activities! She made strong, gradual progress in her social/emotional growth. Sophia has had days that caused setbacks, such as weekly visits to her mother that sometimes appeared to confuse and upset her. Her mother was often talking to her about "coming home" when that was not a possibility.

She loves her grandparents and they love her dearly. Her aunt and uncle are extremely caring and supportive and have children at home. Staff gently encouraged her as she became more vocal, less hesitant, and fully participated in conversations, indoor and outdoor play, art activities, music, listening to and discussing stories, and sharing with her many friends. She clearly had staff that she considered important confidants.

Her family, with input from a counselor and the Department of Human Services, chose to have her wait a year to further socially and emotionally develop in a familiar, secure setting before starting kindergarten. It has been very beneficial and her increased levels of communication and confidence are clearly evident. It has been a joy to watch her "bloom"!
