United Way Working to Uncover Cause of Low Birth Weight Babies

Babies born weighing less than 5.5 pounds have a higher risk of poor health and falling behind later in life. Black Hawk County has one of the highest rates of low birth weight babies in the state, with 8.3% of babies born coming in below 5.5 pounds. That's why we've partnered with the Black Hawk County Health Department, UnityPoint Health--Allen Hospital and Wheaton Franciscan Health System to find what's causing these children to start life at a disadvantage. The project was recently featured in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. Click here to read the story.
