Helping the Tornado Victims Two days after tornados hit the Cedar Valley, many are left wondering what they can do to help those affected. Here’s what you can do to help:
Cash—Cash contributions can be directed to the Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross, PO Box 1680, Waterloo, IA 50704, 319.234.6831, or The Salvation Army, PO Box 867, Waterloo, IA 50704, 319.235.9358. Please direct donations to Iowa Tornado Relief. KWWL will be hosting an on air fundraiser for the Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross Wednesday, May 28. They will need volunteers throughout the day to man the phones. On air time is 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Please call 319.234.6831 to schedule a time. They are making and maintaining the schedule. The phones will be at the KWWL Building, 500 E. 4th Street, Waterloo. Food—Food donations can be made to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank, 106 E. 11th Street, Waterloo, IA 50703, 319.235.0507. Clothing—Clothing donations can be given to The Salvation Army, 89 Franklin Street, Waterloo or Goodwill. Goodwill intends to set up a distribution when appropriate in Parkersburg. Volunteer—Volunteer names and phone numbers are being collected by Emergency Management of Butler and Black Hawk Counties. Volunteers will be contacted as needed. Butler County Emergency Management, 319.267.9967. Black Hawk County Emergency Management, 319.291.4373. You may also call the Hazleton Fire Department to volunteer.
Where to Turn if You Need Help The Hawkeye Chapter of the Red Cross has set up shelters at the Aplington Middle School, the Dunkerton Community Schools and at the First Presbyterian Church, 100 3rd Street, Hazelton. Check to see if a boil order is in effect for your location. The Butler County Engineer's office is asking that people arrange with them the disposal of household items or to inspect their wells. That number is (319) 267-3630. Hawkeye Valley Area Agency on Aging may have financial assistance for elders (60+) affected by the storm. Call their Senior Helpline for assistance at 319.272.1767 or 877.538.0508. Families are encouraged to register on the American Red Cross “Safe and Well” web site to let those outside of the affected areas know they are all right. You can also contact the American Red Cross at 1-866-Get-Info or 1-866-438-4636. The Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross has set up a service center for intakes will be at the Armory at the Waterloo Regional Airport. Their process will be to do an interview, provide a client assistance card. Victims can get food & shelter through the sites they have set up at churches etc. The Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross has set up a service center at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 304 2nd Street, Parkersburg from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Case workers there meet will with families to match Red Cross assistance with their individual needs. Grief counseling is available at the fire house in New Hartford. Iowa Telecom is providing high speed Internet and telephone service at the shelter in Aplington.
