Cedar Valley Unite Way and the United Way of America
United Way of America is a network of volunteers and local charities helping to meet the health and human-care needs for millions of people everyday. With a 108-year history the United Way has proven its effectiveness in serving people through use of community-based organizations.

· There are more than 1,300 community-based United Way organizations.

· These United Way organizations raise funds to support local agency providers totaling approximately 45,000 agencies and chapters, helping millions of people from all walks of life.

· In 2004-2005, the United Way system raised $3.86 billion in current year support, making it the nation's single largest private charity.

· The United Way insures that all programs receiving funds are non-profit, tax-exempt charities governed by volunteers.

Serving those in need has been the purpose of the United Way from its conception. Starting in 1887 when Denver religious leaders formed the Charity Organization Society, the roots of what is known nationally as the United Way and locally the Cedar Valley United Way, began to germinate. The first national Community Chest was born in Cleveland, where a program for allocating campaign funds was developed. The organization continued to grow and in 1949 Detroit became the first community to adopt the name “United Fund.” The first “United Way” campaign in 1888 in Denver raised $21,700 and the campaign only ran one month.

United Way of America (UWA) is the national service and training center supporting member United Ways by helping them to pursue dual strategies of adding value to the community and conducting cost-effective, donor-oriented fund raising to increase financial resources. United Way of America headquarters does not direct the activities of local organizations. They do provide research based information, technical assistance and training.
